Obituary of Emily Cribb Moïse

Emily Cribb Moïse passed away peacefully Saturday, December 24, with her sons by her side, a few weeks after celebrating her 95th birthday. Born November 23, 1921, Mrs. Moïse spent her life loving and helping others. The daughter of Melvin and Lydie Cribb, Mrs. Moïse grew up in Hemingway, SC, and graduated from Columbia College in 1942. After teaching and coaching basketball at high schools in Hemingway and Lancaster, she joined the United States Women’s Naval Reserve (WAVES) to serve her country during World War II. She earned a medical laboratory certificate from Duke University in 1948 and became Chief of Medical Technicians at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter where she met her husband of 45 years, Dr. Davis D. Moïse. Dr. and Mrs. Moïse loved the outdoors and enjoyed numerous camping trips across the United States and Europe, including hiking the Appalachian Trail. Wherever they went, they made new and lasting friendships. Mrs. Moïse was interested in the lives and families of all she met, and cherished her relationships with others. She volunteered in organizations in which she could help others, such as the American Red Cross. She was a former president of the SC Medical Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Temple Sinai Sisterhood, and the Trinity United Methodist Women (UMW). Mrs. Moïse was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Davis Moïse and her daughter Sally. She is survived by her three sons, Davis Jr. “Dee” of Columbia, John (Diane) of Raleigh, NC, Marc (Connie) of Irvine, CA; two sisters, Lynn DuRant of Myrtle Beach and Karen West (Steve) of Florence; one brother, Keith Cribb (Joy) of Myrtle Beach; and grandchildren, Taylor, Preston Scott, Will, John Ross, Sam and David. The family would like to extend special thanks to Margaret Moïse Moses (Emily’s niece) and Frank for their constant devotion. Graveside Funeral Services, officiated by Rabbi Sanford Marcus and the Rev. Dr. Reginald Thackston, will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, December 27, at Sumter Jewish Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Taylor Moïse, Preston Scott Moïse, Will Moïse, John Ross Moïse, Gabriel Marquez, Sam Moïse and David Moïse. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 226 W. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150, to Temple Sinai, P. O. Box 1673, Sumter, SC 29151, or to the Tuomey Foundation, 102 N. Main St., Sumter, SC 29150. The family will receive friends at Mrs. Moïse’ home immediately following the graveside service. A remembrance service for Mrs. Moïse, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Steven Holler and Rev. Dr. Reginald Thackston, will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, December 28, at Covenant Place, 2825 Carter Road in Sumter.
