Richard Jearl Turnmeyer, 80, husband of Gabrielle Young-Turnmeyer, died on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. Born on January 30, 1942, in Mullens, WV, he was the son of the late Richard R. Turnmire and Clora Woodard Turnmire. He was a proud U. S. Marine and U. S. Air Force veteran who retired after 28 years of meritorious service. He spent many years working abroad with Boeing/Alsalam Aerospace Joint Venture where he and his wife, Gail, were fortunate to travel and see things they could have only imagined seeing growing up. He spent 20 years working as a volunteer with Kairos Prison Ministries and for the last approximate 15 years, served as a chaplain with “full movement designation” within the prisons he served. In October 2021, he earned his Master’s degree of Theology in Ministry and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity, through Cathedral Bible College. Surviving in addition to his wife of 34 years are a daughter JoAnne Collins (Brian) of Salisbury, NC; sons, Scott Turnmeyer (Shoni) of Palm City, FL and Stephen Turnmeyer (Amy) of Valdosta, GA, as well as two stepchildren, Barclay B. Young, Jr. (Jodel) of Old Saybrook, CT and Cynthia Young-Dodsworth (David) of Yorktown, VA, and two sisters, Betty Turnmire Smith of OH and Bonnie Turnmire Wynn of KY. He was also blessed with 20 grandchildren, 7 great-grands and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 4 brothers, William, Robert, Thomas, and Harry Turnmire; two children, a son, Richard J. Turnmeyer, Jr. and a stepdaughter, Laura Young-Wotring; as well as two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday, April 9, 2022, in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Nathaniel officiating. Burial will be held in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. Saturday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lighthouse Baptist Church, P. O. Box 1751, Sumter, SC 29151.
