Obituary of John H. Burchstead

Greenville - John Henry Burchstead, 68, died Jan. 26, 2025, in Greenville after a long illness. The son of the late Harry B. and Julia R. Burchstead of Reidville, he is survived by his wife, JoAnne; his brothers Harry Burchstead (Barbara) of Sumter and Palmer Burchstead of Reidville; and sisters Anne Howard (W. Edward) of Lexington and Karin Kapsidelis (Thomas) of Richmond, Va. He was a beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews. John was born March 25, 1956, at Fort Meade, Md., and grew up as the youngest of five Army “brats” in Germany, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina. He graduated from James F. Byrnes High School, where he played saxophone in the school band, and Wofford College, where he earned an ROTC scholarship. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army. John’s military career included a tour of duty in South Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division as a platoon leader at the demilitarized zone during a period of heightened tensions with North Korea. He also commanded a basic training company at Fort Jackson. After the military, he worked in procurement and building management for businesses in Greenville and for Cherokee County public schools. John was active in the Masons and as a trustee for the historic Reidville school property. During his younger years, he played guitar in a band and was a volunteer firefighter. He was an outdoorsman, pilot and motorcyclist. John was known for his sharp wit and sense of humor that he never lost even as his health deteriorated. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 3 at Nazareth Presbyterian Church in Moore, S.C. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to Nazareth Presbyterian Church.
