Obituary of Brig. Gen. Retired Hugh McLaurin, III

Wedgefield - Brigadier General Retired Hugh McFaddin McLaurin, III, 89, husband of Virginia Anne Harvin McLaurin, died Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Hugh McFaddin McLaurin, Jr. and Louise Nettles McLaurin.
General McLaurin was a member and Elder Emeritus of Wedgefield Presbyterian Church, retired as a Brigadier General with the South Carolina Army National Guard and was instrumental in founding the SC National Guard Museum. He was a 1958 Clemson University graduate where he obtained a BS in Horticulture and was a member of the Tiger Brotherhood.
He was a member of the Thalian, Assembly and Les Trente Clubs, Fortnightly Club, Mount Vernon Club, the Field Artillery Society, Society of the High Hills of Santee, served on the Thornwell Board and Sumter County Museum Board, and the Sons of the American Revolution.
General McLaurin loved the Wedgefield Presbyterian Church, his family, farm and forestry, the State of SC, history and genealogy, Edisto and Clemson University. He was a gifted orator and writer, narrating ETV Swamp Fox Documentary. He presented dozens of lectures and writings centered around farm, family and military history.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mary Louise McLaurin Jones (Wade), Virginia McLaurin Mota (Dan), and a son, Hugh McFaddin McLaurin, IV (Leigh); a sister, Jennie Linn McLaurin Duffie (John); grandchildren, Virginia McLaurin Cupstid (Brandon), Wade Hampton Jones, IV (Barnwell), Michael McLaurin Mota (Courtnie), Joseph Cooper Mota, Majid Amir Corbett, Hugh McFaddin McLaurin V, Bentham Edmunds McLaurin, and Austin Lucas McLaurin; great-grandchildren, Henry McLaurin Cupstid, William Harvin Cupstid, Wade Hampton Jones V, and Danielle Claire Mota and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the Wedgefield Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jody Foster officiating.
Burial will follow in the Wedgefield Presbyterian Church Cemetery with full military honors.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Mt. Vernon Coffee Club.
The family will receive friends following the graveside service.
