My dad carried a large big invisible heart on his sleeve. He would express that kindness through spreading joy by way of his humor. Whether it was a joke or funny story those around him got to
see his beautiful heart as he changed the pitch of his voice and the facial expression to match the characters of his “slightly” embellished stories. As he had done so many times before he would draw you in and get you to laugh with him and at him to become part of the happy moment; especially during the difficult times. You could see the joy in his heart when he knew he had carried you through into his funny story and made you chuckle and smile. That was one of his greatest gifts of love that I and so many who knew him had the joy to receive.
I have my dad to thank for fostering that humor in our family that continues to give us strength even in times of sadness and doubt. He loved a laugh and loved through laughter.
At an early age he appreciated and was fascinated by nature’s wild creatures. Taking his family and friends on adventures camping,
on a trail, or on his boat. Quite often those adventures became the source of many funny stories he would like to tell. Although some of those adventures may not have seemed to have been so funny at the time, being the master storyteller, he would have you hanging on every word of the retelling, giggling all the way.
He was a devote family man. He took great joy and pride being with , providing for, and entertaining his family. He felt deeply about his Christianity and relationship with God. He had a strong desire to do right unto others even near the last of his days.
The picture is of a lilly pad flower in the courtyard Koi pond with waterfall that he built at his house which we all enjoyed so much.

I will never forget the fond memories of “lil Ben” and all the Abbott cousins at Edisto Beach every summer when I was a kid. It was a charmed time and I remember Lil’ Ben was always smiling and wanting to go deep sea fishing. He was so anxious to go fishing one day he forgot to tighten the boat motor down on the stern and up and over went the motor in the water. It took days to dry that motor out. I remember the Army jeep too with the coon tail hooked to the antenna. I was lucky to know him. Those were the best times. But now those times have turned to sad times. My thoughts and prayers go out to Aileen, Susan, Benji, and all the brothers and Mary and all the family. He’ll be greatly missed. Love to you all. Dave Palmer

My wonderful father-in-law was such a great person. He had an incredible smile. He warmed our hearts and could light up the darkest room with his gentle spirit. I feel so fortunate to have known such a loving person who always put his family first. All that knew him were touched by his love and his deep love for his family.
All my love

A best friend of 62 years, Ben was a loving, open and always smiling man. From first meeting him as a young Air Force Lieutenant, we became best friends. A separation of 30 years, when we re-united, in the 1990's seemed only like yesterday.
He will be truly missed, and never forgotten.
