Obituary of Miriam Brotman Gordin
Please share a memory of Miriam to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Miriam Brotman Gordin, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025, at the age of 92.
Born on July 18, 1933, at Baker Hospital in Charleston, SC, she was the only child of Charlotte Salz Brotman and Rafael (Ralph) Brotman.
Miriam was a 1955 graduate of the College of Charleston. Following graduation, she married the love of her life, David Gordin (OBM) on August 14, 1955, at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston. They made their home in David’s hometown of Summerton, SC where they raised their four children – Rachel Barnett (Henry), Dan Gordin (Lisa), Stephen Gordin (Sandy). Their daughter, Deborah Gordin-Markel, preceded them with her passing at the age of 30.
Miriam was the consummate teacher and spent more than four decades teaching in Clarendon County schools. Many of her students remember “Miss” Miriam’s classes in history and government at Clarendon Hall as well as her classes at Manning High School, and the Clarendon County Adult Education Center.
Miriam was a member of Temple Sinai in Sumter, SC and served as President of the Sisterhood and taught religious school. She and David were dedicated to their children, making sure that education and Jewish life were at the forefront of their upbringing. Holiday gatherings in Summerton were especially important to them.
Miriam moved to Summit Hills Retirement Community in Spartanburg, SC after her husband passed away. There, she formed friendships and continued engaging in her hobbies of playing bridge and reading.
Miriam leaves a legacy of love, warmth, kindness, and compassion. She was the proud grandmother of Chase Levinson, Emily Levinson, Ari Gordin, Sarah Gordin, Debby Gordin, Jonathan Nutting (Hannah), Sarah Nutting (Patrick Numair), and great-grandchildren, Eliana Nutting, and Noah Nutting, and cherished hearing about every detail of their lives.
A graveside service will be held at Temple Sinai Cemetery 700 West Oakland Avenue, Sumter, SC at 3 PM on Thursday, October 23.
Pallbearers will be Chase Levinson, Ari Gordin, Stuart Shapiro, Norman Shapiro, Joseph Berliner, Jonathan Nutting, Phil Greenberg, and Andy Volin.
The family would like to thank the excellent team at Summit Hills Assisted Living especially Lisa Blakely, Tameika Wade, and Sherry Allman with Spartanburg Regional Hospice.
