When I think about Papa Doc and his many talents and gifts, the one that stands out to be the most was his and grandmommys aBility to raise a family that has stayed close and loved each deeply for so many years. I try to take tidbits from him and then what my dad has passed on to me that he learned from him as I raise my own children. That includes holding people accountable in a gentle way, not being afraid to give affection and affirmations and loving them, no matter what they choose to do or who they become. The perfect example of the gentle accountability was when I was about six years old and I took a golf club to the tops of all his new Leeland Cypress’s. He didn’t yell at me. He just wrote me a sweet note and told me I owed him money to replace all of them. It took a long time as a six-year-old to make that money, but I did it, and I never chopped a tree down again with a golf club. He was never afraid to hold my hand no matter how old I got. And much to my children’s distain he would always pat me really hard on the back and now my dad does it and I do it to my kids- it’s called a love pat. He didn’t just love his family well though he loved his community, his patience, and everyone he interacted with. I’m so proud to be well I’m so proud to be Wilson and I’m honored my kids get to carry on his legacy.
