Obituary of Verena Meir Matthews

Verena Meir Matthews, 91, widower of Arthur Gordon Matthews Jr., died Monday, April 14, 2026, at her home in Sumter, South Carolina.

 

Born in Schinznach-Dorf, Switzerland, she was a daughter of the late Albert Meir and Marie Schaffner Meir.

 

She was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church and was retired from V.B. Williams Furniture Company.

 

She is survived by her children, Linda V. Mungia (Edward P.), Sharon A. Gist (Robert) and Rhonda Barrick (John); grandchildren, Michelle Jenkins (Mike), Brooke Martin (Wade) and Kelly Rowell (Michael); great-grandchildren, Emelia Jenkins, William Jenkins, Shepherd Rowell, Lottie Rowell, Jacob Rowell, Elizabeth Rowell and Wilder Martin; and a sister, Lottie Meir-Meyers.

 

Private services will be held.
