My entire life, I have known Mr. Boyle as a wonderful family friend—truly part of my extended family. There was always something so special about him. I remember as a kid just thinking, wow, he’s so cool. And somehow, I never outgrew that impression… and he never outgrew his coolness.
He had a presence that was warm, effortless, and unforgettable. When he and my dad were together, it felt like they had their own little world—the “cool kids club.” It’s a memory that still makes me smile.
I am so grateful for the friendship he shared with my parents, especially with my dad. It broke my dad’s heart when he became ill, and I find comfort now in imagining them reunited, at peace.
Mr. Boyle was deeply loved and highly regarded, and his loss will be felt by so many. My heart aches for the Boyle family. I hope you can find some peace in knowing how much light and warmth he brought into the lives of everyone around him.
With love always,
I love you, Boyle family.

The first time I met Joe, Wilson Green brought him to our Sunday school class at Church of the Holy Comforter. When I came in, Wilson was chasing Joe around the big table ( we were 10 or 11 ). I instinctively grabbed Joe from behind to catch him for Wilson, and Joe instinctively elbowed me in the stomach, knocking the wind out of my lungs. I remember pretending I was fine, choking out "wind knocked out" and forcing a smile. We went on to become friends, and served as acolytes for the church, and later played Jr. Varsity football together at Sumter High, where I was a first string tackling dummy and Joe played half-back and defensive back. After I moved to Nashville I attended a Saturday football party at Joe's and Mary Don's house during a visit to Sumter, and Joe and Mary Don were always supportive of my musical efforts. I'm sorry we lost him too early, and send my love to Mary Don, kids and grandkids......Rob Crosby Hoar
