Obituary of Donald Francis Henry, Jr.

Donald Francis Henry, Jr., 81, beloved husband of Laura Egnozzi Henry, died Monday, July 6, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

 

Born February 16, 1945, in Athens, Louisiana, he was a son of the late Donald F. Henry, Sr. and Mary Lynn Atkins Henry.

 

Don was a gifted athlete whose remarkable abilities became evident at an early age. He graduated from Athens High School, where his legendary talent on the basketball court earned him the rare distinction of having two of his jersey numbers retired. His athletic abilities earned him scholarships in both basketball and baseball to Centenary College, where he excelled as a student athlete and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business.

Don’s exceptional talent did not go unnoticed. His abilities caught the attention of professional scouts, resulting in official offers from both the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago White Sox. Although he had the opportunity to pursue a career in professional sports, Don ultimately chose a different path. For him, family came first, and he chose to build a life centered around the people he loved most. He went on to enjoy a successful professional career before retiring several years ago.

 

As impressive as Don’s athletic accomplishments were, those who knew him best understood that his greatest legacy was not found in records, retired numbers, or professional opportunities. It was found in the life he built, the family he loved, and the relationships he treasured.

 

Don shared 48 years of marriage with his loving and devoted wife, Laura. Their life together was built on love, companionship, commitment, and the many memories they created through the years. He was deeply devoted to his family and took great pride in his children and grandchildren. To those closest to him, Don was much more than an accomplished athlete and successful businessman—he was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend whose presence will be deeply missed.

 

Survivors include his wife, Laura; his dear sister, Lynnette Valentine; his children and their spouses, Debra and Michael Williams, M.D., Meredith and D.W. Youngblood, Alex Henry, Sean and Jill Lynch, and Lauren Henry; and his cherished grandchildren, Brennan, Tess, Hunner, Lanndan, Brendan, Josh, Jamie, and Jackie.

 

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Athens, Louisiana.
