Obituary of Alice "Betsy" Richardson

Please share a memory of Alice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Alice Elizabeth “Betsy” Dobson Richardson, wife of Robert Clinton “Bobby” Richardson, Jr., died Thursday morning, July 16.

Born in Conway, SC, she was a daughter of the late Mary Alderman Dobson, better known as NaNa.

Mrs. Richardson was a longtime member of Harmony Church and Grace Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of Sumter; three sons, Rev. Robby Richardson (Karen) of North Muskegon, MI; Rev. Dr. Ron Richardson (Darlene) of Rock Hill, SC; Rich Richardson (Emily) of Atlanta, GA; two daughters, Christie Kendall (Paul) of Black Mountain, NC and Jeannie Kay (John) of Sumter, SC; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Deckie Strange and Jean Gulledge.

Betsy is known for her love for God and for people as well as her desire to introduce people to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was convinced that all have sinned and that none of us deserve to go to heaven (Romans 3:23; 6:23), but that God showed His love by sending His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins (Romans 5:8). She loved to share that if we believe in Jesus, we have eternal life (John 3:16). Her favorite verse was Galatians 2:20. Betsy was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a tremendous partner to her husband Bobby Richardson, including during his time playing second base for the New York Yankees and coaching baseball at South Carolina, Coastal, and Liberty.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 12:00 pm at Grace Baptist Church with her sons Rev. Dr. Ron Richardson and Rev. Robby Richardson officiating along with Rev. Dr. Stephen Williams.

The family will begin receiving friends beginning at 10:00 am, two hours prior to the service, in the Fellowship Hall at Grace Baptist Church.

Private burial will be held in Sumter Cemetery.

Grandsons and other family will serve as Pallbearers.

Memorials can be made to Grace Baptist Church, 219 W Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150 or The Mailbox Club, 404 Eager Road, Valdosta, GA 31602.
