Obituary of Reuben Murdrick Hill

Please share a memory of Reuben to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Reuben Murdrick Hill, 82, husband of Lila Follin Hill of Sumter, South Carolina, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Sumter County, South Carolina, on September 20, 1943, Reuben was the son of the late William Edward Hill and Vernie O'Dessie Sanders Hill.

A proud patriot, Reuben devoted more than two decades of his life to serving his country in both the United States Air Force and the United States Army, including two tours of duty in Vietnam. He carried a deep love for his country and was honored to have worn the uniform.

Reuben was a man of strength, resilience, and unwavering determination. He was known for his incredible stories-stories that grew richer with each telling and reflected a life filled with adventure, service, humor, and wisdom. Those who knew him best will forever cherish hearing him tell them one more time. Above all Reuben loved his family.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Guadalupe "Lupe" Ramos Hill, with whom he shared many wonderful years of marriage and raised a family built on love. Later in life, God blessed him with companionship and love through his marriage to Lila Follin Hill, whose care and devotion brought him comfort during his final chapter.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lila Follin Hill; his son, David Allen Hill (Elaine) of Sumter, SC; his daughter, Victoria "Vicki" Hill Poydock (Rick) of Calabash, NC; his grandchildren, Vanessa Hill of Sumter, SC Tyler Thompson of Atlanta, Georgia, and Leigh Thompson of Raleigh, North Carolina; his great-grandson, Kai Allen Hill of Sumter, SC; his brother, Cleveland Hill (Polly) of Sumter; along with many extended family members and dear friends who were blessed to know him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Vernie Hill McCloud; and his brother-in-law, Lanton McCloud.

While Reuben’s life included many accomplishments. Those who loved him will remember him most for his deep love of family, his willingness to serve others, his quiet strength, his unmistakable sense of humor, and the countless stories that connected generations.

His family takes comfort in the promise of scripture: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in my, though he die, yet shall he live.” John 11:25
