Obituary of Joseph Speed Williams

Joseph Speed Williams, 89, husband of Kay Pleasants Williams, died Friday, December 22, 2017 at Palmetto Tuomey Health.   

 

Born in Rocky Mount, NC, he was a son of the late Mark Pettway Jones Williams and Edna Draughn Williams.

 

Mr. Williams was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Rocky Mount, NC.  He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club in Rocky Mount. He was a graduate of Rocky Mount Senior High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a lifelong member of The Rams Club.  He was retired President of Joe S. Williams Company and was a past member of  Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount, NC and Carolina Country Club in Raleigh, NC. He was an avid UNC supporter and golfer.

 

He was also a U. S. Army veteran serving during the Korean War.  

 

Surviving are his wife of 60 years of Sumter; one son, Joseph Mark Williams (Rhonda) of Birmingham, AL; one daughter Katherine “Kay” Williams Smith (Bob) of Sumter; three granddaughters, Katherine Lewis Smith, Nancy Cameron Smith and Cassidy McKay Williams.

 

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mark, Frank and Graham Williams.

 

Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh, NC. with Reverend. Nick Cheek officiating.

 

The family will receive friends from at the home of his daughter, 93 Paisley Park.
