Obituary of Mildred Lynette McGill Boyd

Mildred Lynette McGill Boyd, aged 91, beloved wife of Carl James Boyd, died peacefully on January 30, 2018.

 

Midge was born on May 14, 1926 in Brunswick, GA to Floyd Dewey McGill and Arna Elizabeth White McGill and was one of 8 children.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her three brothers, Floyd McGill, Wendall McGill, and Don McGill, and one sister, Joyce McGill Campbell.  She is survived by three sisters Mary Alice McGill, Kansas City, MS, Bonnie McGinnis, Walterboro, SC, and Elizabeth Laws, Cumming, GA as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She and Carl lived all over the country throughout their wonderful 72 years of marriage during Carl’s service to the United States Navy.  During this time, Midge served as beloved mother and homemaker to Sharon Lynette Boyd and Stanley James Boyd.  She also served as the President of the Navy Wives’ Club of Long Beach, CA, and volunteered in multiple churches, schools, and American Red Cross units throughout the country. After Carl’s retirement, they settled in Falls Church, VA.  While living in Falls Church, their son Stan died suddenly at home, January 17, 1974. 

 

Midge continued to be active in the Northern Virginia community including serving as Director of Blood Donation Services for the entire Northern Virginia area while Carl continued a second career with Honeywell, Inc. During this time, they travelled all over the world, including her favorite trip on safari in Africa. Most recently, Midge and Carl retired to Sumter, SC and have been residents of Covenant Place.

 

A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she is survived by her daughter Sharon Boyd Young and husband Kenneth R. Young, Jr. of Sumter; two grandchildren Stanley Boyd Young and his wife Laura Wood Young of Columbia, SC, and Jennifer Young Pierce and husband Christopher Ross Pierce of Mobile, Alabama; and 4 great-grandchildren, Marion Fahy McGill Pierce, Elizabeth Ross Lynette Pierce, Stanley James Young, and Everest Ann Young.

 

A celebration of life service will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, February 3rd, at First Presbyterian Church officiated by Rev. Ashley Cheek.

 

Memorials may be made to the Sumter SPCA, 1140 S. Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC 29150 or any organization that betters the existence of pets or wildlife as this was a passion of Midge’s.  Donations may also be made to the Women of First Presbyterian Church, 9 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150.
