Obituary of Gayle Turbeville Fohner

Please share a memory of Gayle to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Gayle Turbeville Fohner, 73, widow of Joseph “Jay” Lawrence Fohner, died Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the Hospice House in Florence.

Born in Columbia she was a daughter of the late Michael C. “Pete” Turbeville, Jr. and Maud Stroud Turbeville.

Mrs. Fohner was a member of the Church of the Holy Comforter.  She loved her church and you could tell it was her “family”.  She was always there to help and never grew tired of taking care of others. Like her husband, she had a fondness for the sea and sailing.  Together they explored the Caribbean and many ports of call.  In their final years they came back to Sumter and strengthened their faith in Christ.  She took care of her mother and her husband and was an avid gardener.  She will be missed by the many who loved her.

Surviving are two step-sons, Joseph L. “Joe” Fohner, III (Ellen) of Camden and Thomas A. “Tom” Fohner (Mary) of Omaha, NE; one step-daughter, Deborah Vallez of Chesapeake, VA.; one brother, Michael C. Turbeville, III (Dianna) of Pinewood; one sister, Judith T. Abernathy of Sumter; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by a sister, Joan Virginia Turbeville.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Thursday at the Church of the Holy Comforter with Rev. John Sosnowski officiating.

Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the church Parish Hall.

Memorials may be made to Church of the Holy Comforter, 213 N. Main St. Sumter, SC 29150 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stone Mark Lane, Columbia SC 29210.
