Marjorie “Margie” Compton Byrd Lawrence, 105, died Sunday, June 19, 2022, at National Healthcare Center. Born in Sumter on May 19, 1917, to Benjamin Richard Compton and Elizabeth Hasty Compton. Margie was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was an active member of Trinity Fellowship Sunday School Class as well as other areas of Trinity. She was a sustaining member of the Junior Welfare League and The Sumter Art Association. She was twice married, first to the late Robert Van Buren Byrd and then to the late Hubert R. Lawrence. Surviving is one daughter, Barbara B. Merritt of Charleston, S. C.; six grandchildren, Robbie Byrd of Alabaster, Alabama, Ronnie Byrd of Miami, Florida, Becky B. Callaham (Chip) of Greenville, S.C., Julie M. Mims of Columbia, S. C., Kathy M. Richardson of Columbia, S.C., and Jennie M. Richardson (Selby) of Charleston, S. C.; 13 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a daughter-in-law, Angelia Byrd of Greenville, S.C. She was preceded in death by her son Robert Van Buren Byrd, Jr. and her siblings, B. R. Compton, Dorothy C. Eaddy, Arland H. Compton and Elizabeth C. Wright. Private Graveside Services will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Margie, Mom, Mother, you will be missed by all of us. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 226 W.
