Obituary of Mary Frances Ivey

Mrs. Mary Frances Rumley Ivey, of Sumter, SC, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at the age of 94. Mary was born to parents Harrison Weaver and Bessie Victoria Voss Rumbley on March 16, 1922 in Stokesdale, NC.  She grew up as the eldest of five children and graduated from Guilford High School.  She met Thomas Edison (Ed) Ivey at a taffy pulling party and married him on October 1, 1942 in Spartanburg, SC. They were married for 67 years. Ed joined the Air Force and they traveled extensively, living in Japan, Morocco, Germany, and various assignments in the United States. They retired in Hampton, VA where they lived for 30 years. They moved to Sumter, SC in 2005. Mary was a champion bingo player, an avid golfer and bowler into her 80’s and active in the Officer’s Wives Club. Mary is survived by her son, David Jackson Ivey ( Lea Lea) of Oxford, NC; daughter, Linda Ivey Foshee (Randy) of Simpsonville, SC; daughter Gail Ivey Harris (Harry) of Sumter, SC; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; her brother, Kenneth Rumbley (Patsy) of Summerfield, NC; sister Jeanne Rumbley Knight ( Bill) of Stokesdale, NC; sister Gaynelle Rumbley Knight (Louis) of Summerfield, NC; and a sister-in- law, Joan Ivey Tillman of Siler City, NC.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. (USAF Ret.) Thomas E. Ivey. Memorial contributions can be made to Alice Drive Baptist Church, Sumter, SC or your favorite charity.
