R. David Player, 74, husband of Patricia “Pat” Herring Player, died Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at Palmetto Health Tuomey Hospital.

 

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Ralph P. Player and Lila Amerson Player.

 

Mr. Player was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church where he held various offices in the church.

He was retired from GTE and also was a Retired Command Sergeant Major with the SC Army National Guard with 39 years of service.  He was a member of the Progressive Club, a volunteer with Sumter Christian Charities and was a former commander of American Legion Post 15.

 

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; three sons, Troy Player (Kim) of Apex, NC, Trent Player (Susanne) of Rock Hill, SC, and Tregg Player (Wendy) of Madison, AL; six grandchildren, Lauren Redding (Dillon), Lexie Player, Lindsay Player, Josh Player, Reed Player and Logan Player; one great-granddaughter, Abigail Redding; a sister, Angeline King (Leon) of Columbus, OH; his father-in-law, Reedy Herring of Sumter; a niece, Kim Hutchison (Jeff); a nephew, David King (Diana).

 

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Melanie Lynn Player.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Friday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Rev. David Day

officiating.

 

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. 

 

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the American Legion, the Progressive Club, retired members of the SC National Guard and members of the Seekers Sunday School class; also Hinson Floyd, Billy Anderson, Joe Bartlette, Frank Holloway, Jr. and Scott Mickey.

 

The family will receive friends from 2 P.M. until 3 P.M. Friday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
