Joseph Lee Baker, Sr., 74, husband of Barbara Ellen Cockerill Baker, died Sunday, December 30, 2018 in Sumter.

 

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late David Joseph Baker and Elizabeth Ward Baker. 

 

Mr. Baker attended Pine Grove Baptist Church.  He was a U. S. Army veteran and was formerly employed by Goldkist and retired from Pilgrims Pride.  He was an avid outdoorsman, loved fishing and loved his grandchildren. 

 

Surviving are his wife, Barbara; a daughter, Beverly Suggs (Kevin); three grandchildren, Gareth, Nathan, Everett; a brother, Ricky Baker (Cyndi); a niece, Kim Harrelson (Rhett) and nephew, Carson; and a niece, Vikki Catoe (Ronnie) and great-nephew, Israel.

 

He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph; an uncle and aunt, Leslie and Ruth Ward; aunts, Lillian Ward and Alice Graham; and a sister, Carolyn Stewart.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Thursday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Rev. Pete Mixon officiating.

 

Burial will be in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

Pallbearers will be John Cockerill, Newton Cockerill, Mickey Cockerill, Leroy Cockerill, Thomas Suggs and Warren Suggs.

 

The family will receive friends from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. Thursday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.
