Samuel “Sam” Leroy Carraway, Jr., 64, husband of Elizabeth “Betsy” Newman Carraway, died Sunday, March 8, 2020, at Duke University Hospital. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Samuel Leroy “Roy” Carraway and Evelyn Nesbitt Carraway. Mr. Carraway was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church. He taught Sunday School and served as Chairman of the Benevolence Committee for many years. He was a graduate of Furman High School and the University of South Carolina. He was the former owner and operator of Carraway Cleaners for 30 years. Since 2007, he worked in sales in the dry cleaning industry for Fuller Supply, N.S. Farrington Company and was also a devoted employee of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. He was a “salt of the earth man” who devoted his life to loving and supporting his family, serving his Lord, and he gave his all to his job. Surviving are his wife of Sumter; a son, Samuel Edward Carraway (Meredith) of Chapin; a daughter, Louise Carraway Reynolds (Bobby) of Charleston; a sister, Cindy Carraway of Higginsville, MO; a grandson, James Geddings Carraway; his beloved mother-in-law, Louise Newman Smith who he affectionately called “Young Lady”; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Roy Neal Newman Carraway; two sisters, Brenda Carraway Flanagan, Martha Carraway Partin and his brother-in-law, Paul Flanagan. Funeral Services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Dr. Dan Barber and Dr. Bob Calvert officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. Friday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.
