Glenn Irwin Coker, husband of Gloria D. Coker, died Saturday, July 4, 2020 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. Born in Turbeville, June 24, 1943, he was a son of the late William Riley Coker, Sr. and Ruby Hardy Coker. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Cary Glenn Coker (Natalie) of Sumter, a daughter, Ansley Coker Allsbrooks (Jason) of Columbia. He had 4 granddaughters, Gracyn, Anna Kate, Ellis and Riley Coker, 3 grandsons Price, Luke and Bodie Allsbrooks. He is survived by a brother William Riley “Bill” Coker Jr. (Betty) of Camden. Sisters-in-law include Rae Dennis McWhirter (Tom) of Atlanta, Ga. and Stella Weeks Goodson of Sumter. Nieces and nephews include Dr. Steve Coker (Margaret) of Cary NC, Becky Coker Moseley (Clint) of Camden SC, Ali McWhirter Cockran (Ben) of South Korea, John McWhirter (Meredith) of Atlanta Ga., Max Goodson (Anne) of Sumter, Kirk Goodson (Danita) of Clemson, SC. He was predeceased by a sister “Joanie” Coker. Glenn graduated from East Clarendon High School, Columbia Hospital School of Radiologic Technology and the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy. He served in the US Army and was located at the Munich American Hospital. He was owner of Sibert’s Rexall Drugs for 15 years, pharmacist for Eckerd’s (Rite-Aid) for 20 years, and Walgreens for 5 years. In high school he attended Boy’s State and was drum major for his high school band. He played clarinet and piano. He served as deacon at First Baptist Church and First Presbyterian of Sumter. He was a leader for teens at night church, played the piano for the Bethany and Fraser Edmunds Sunday School classes and sang in the church choir for many years. He was a past member of the Lions Club, Mt. Vernon Coffee Club, Carolinian and Camellia Dance Clubs, and Santee Sailing Club. When he was younger, he enjoyed traveling and camping with his family. He spent many years teaching the children to water ski and pulling them and their friends tubing behind the boat. We are grateful for the doctors including Dr. Andy Reynolds and Dr. Phil Brandt for the many years of loving care. A private family service will be held at this time due to Covid-19. Rev. Nick Cheek will officiate. Burial will follow at graveside at a later date. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 9 W. Calhoun St. Sumter SC 29150.
