I remember Laura Ellen and Charlie Mac taking me under their wings when I was dating my husband. I did not grow up playing golf or cards, other than the family beach vacation trips that consisted of spades, hearts or gin rummy. Steve and I were the youngest members of Sunset Country Club when I became friends with the McLendons through Mr. and Mrs. Broome who had been friends with the McLendons for years. They always welcomed me with open arms, smiles, laughter at the Club and at their home. The made me feel as if I were an extended family member. Steve and I both miss Charlie Mac and now will miss Laura Ellen.
I hope they will be playing golf or cards with the Broomes, Krumpotiches, Munns, and many, many more. They both own a piece of my heart and the world could use more people like them.
My prayers go out to the family. You should be proud of the parents you were given...

A beautiful spirit! I consider myself privileged to have been Laura Ellen’s daughter-in-law for many years. Ya-Ya loved her family dearly and will be dearly missed by many. I remember her laughter, her great faith, and her love of music and books. She taught me two great lessons - to be humble and to enjoy life. Some of my fondest memories are of time spent in her kitchen; eating humble pie while playing Shanghai - trying to beat any of the McLendons (especially Jack) and losing miserably, looking at the pictures of family and friends she proudly hung on her refrigerator, and talking politics over the paper on a Sunday morning. My deepest sympathy to her family and friends. Please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers in the days and weeks to come.

"She was a true southern Belle" indeed. We will miss Laura Ellen, her most twinkling bright blue eyes ever, and consider ourselves blessed to have her as a friend. If you were one of her children's "people", then you were one of hers as well, a great privilege. Our hearts are hurting for her Loves ones here, but there's no question where she is now. Our Love to you All.
