In the years since we moved away from Sumter, I had forgotten his name . . . but I have often told his story. How his wife was a dancer, how involved she was in the little theatre. And then somehow he got talked into trying out for The Music Man, and how he shone! Over the years that image has stayed with me, urging me to try, to take a chance, to give it my all. Today I picked up last week’s paper and said, that’s who he was: Roger Ackerman. I am grateful for the way his life touched mine. Karin Bascom Culp

Dear Ackerman Family,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your loved one. He seemed to live a full life that touch so many other lives. His self-sacrificing spirit proves that there are so many unsung heroes that are not fully recognized for their generosity. Please know that he will be missed and that he left the world in a better place. The prophet Isaiah wrote that God "will swallow up death forever" (Isa 25:8). I know you all look forward to the time when this will happen. Until then he will rest in God's memory with Moses, Noah, and David. I found this website helpful when I lost a relative, jw.org. May God's peace and love rest upon you all.

As a past President of Hartsville Rotary Club I had the privilege to chat with Roger about our local Cart Fund contributions! No doubt he was Mr. Rotarian, as he was very passionate about the Rotary Cart Fund and what it stood for. Roger will be greatly missed and he truly put service above self! Bootsie

Among the worst things about growing old is the loss of those irreplaceable friends who added richness and depth to your life. A life well lived is defined by what we contribute, how we love, and who we become. Few people exemplify this more than Roger. Love, strength, and prayers to Deane and family.

I am truly sorry to hear about this unfortunate passing. My condolences go out to the entire family. Hopefully the family will find comfort in the Bible at Revelation 21:4 where it promises that “death will be no more”. I ask that if you are ever approached by a Jehovah’s Witness, please feel free to express any question you may have about death, so that we may discuss from the Bible the hope that we will see our loved ones again.

Roger was a joy to be around-I met Roger at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County in Camden where he and his lovely wife Deane were regular patrons for our chamber music series. His enthusiasm and passion for the music was always a bright light and I loved seeing them at every concert. In addition, I knew Roger through my years of service in Rotary. His leadership with the CART Fund was also such a special gift. I am saddened to hear of his passing and and send my love and prayers to you all.

His friends, the Sumter community, the United States of America, and the world are all better for Roger's presence. That cannot be said about many people. I am honored to have met him.
