Obituary of Virginia Elder

Virginia Marshall Elder, 102, widow of William Waverly Elder, Jr., entered into the presence of the Lord on Sunday July 4th 2021 at Covenant Place of Sumter. Born in Franklin County, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Fielding Benjamin Marshall and Mary Frances LeMay Marshall. After attending the Spencerian Commercial School in Louisville, KY, she worked for the War Production Board in Washington, D.C., during WWII. Following her marriage, she lived first at Fort Monmouth, NJ, and then in Louisville and Atlanta before moving to Columbia in 1963. She was a devoted wife and excellent homemaker. Mrs. Elder was a member of Woodlands Hills Community Church in Columbia. She was also an active member of P.E.O. Chapter C, the Trenholm Road Artists Guild, Child Evangelism Fellowship, the Four Seasons Garden Club, and attended or contributed to numerous community organizations. Her calling and love throughout her life were her day-to-day encounters sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Surviving are a daughter, Karen Ingram (Dr. Jim Ingram) of Sumter; three grandchildren, Dr. Benjamin Ingram (Patrizia), US Army; David R. Ingram (Ashley) of Anderson; Dr. Elizabeth Shands (Joseph) of Greer; and three great-grandchildren, Cates Shands, William Shands, and Anna Maria Ingram. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 7th, at Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbia, S.C. with Rev. Paul Cochrane officiating. The service will also be live-streamed by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home in Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and also following the graveside services.
