Obituary of Garis Helen Norris

Garis Helen Humphrey Norris, 91, widow of Hubbard Leon Norris, died Saturday, September 25, 2021, at Generations of Irmo in Irmo, SC. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Levi Jackson Humphrey and Elizabeth Adelle Broughton Humphrey. Mrs. Norris was a member of Sumter First Baptist Church and was formerly employed by Campbell Soup Company and Tuomey Hospital. Surviving are a son, Douglas Randal Norris (Karen) of Conyers, GA; a daughter-in-law, Jo E. Norris of Columbia; two brothers, Robert Humphrey (Wanda) of Atlanta, GA and Bill Humphrey of Columbia; four grandchildren, James Edward Norris (MariLou), Jonathon Lee Norris (Staci), Tim Norris, (Roberta) and Jennie Ruth Norris (Randy); seven great-grandchildren; and three “adopted” grandchildren, Judy, Pam and Sam whom she cared for as infants. She was preceded in death by a son, Edward Leon Norris; a sister, Mary Lee McDaniel; and three brothers, M. L. Humphrey, John Humphrey, and Frank Humphrey. She raised her five brothers after her mother died from ovarian cancer at a young age. Garis was in high school at the time and managed the household while going to school. She and her husband enjoyed their camper in the mountains and square dancing. She loved all babies and children. Graveside services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Brett DeYoung officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service.
