Obituary of George Gerhardt Berg

George Gerhardt Berg, 73, died Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. George was the second son of Rev. John Berner Berg and Alfreda Elizabeth Moller Berg and born in the hospital at Marinette, Wisconsin; they resided in the nearby community of Porterfield. George's older and living brother, "Johnny" John Allen Berg and a younger and living brother, Rolf Berg, are in Wisconsin. He was pre-deceased by the oldest sibling, their sister, Ann Berg Oie in 2000. He graduated high school in Wisconsin in 1966 and went to the University of Wisconsin from which he graduated with a degree in Geography. He then enlisted in the Marines in 1970 and was a Vietnam War veteran and a Captain. He was initially stationed at Parris Island Marine Base, Parris Island, S. C., where he met "Millie" Mildred Hall Shaw who was living in Beaufort. They married October 6, 1973 in Sumter, S. C., and he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1981. He then went to the University of South Carolina and got a degree in Accounting. He was later employed by SAFE Federal Credit Union as a Network Manager for 15 years. He was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. They subsequently had two children, a girl ("Amy" Amanda Lee Berg) and a boy ("G2" George G. Berg, II). Amy married Geoff Roberts, and they had Christopher Allan and Elizabeth Anne. G2 married "Chelly" Michelle Labordo of the Philippines and they had Milana and Naomi. Chelly's parents, Emmanuel and Susana Labordo, also came to Sumter. The whole family lives in Sumter, and George and Millie had been enjoying retirement and family in Sumter for years. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday, July 19th at St. Anne Catholic Church with Father German “Gerry” Cocquilla, Jr. officiating. A cremains burial service with military honors will be held at Sumter Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations in George's memory were desired by him to be to the Knights of Columbus, 705 Haynsworth St., Sumter, S. C. 29150.
