Obituary of Shirley Hurst

Shirley Patricia Holt Hurst, widow of William Ansley “Sonny” Hurst, Jr., died Friday, September 29, 2023, at her home in Sumter. Born in Bradenton, FL, she was a daughter of the late Charles Wesley Holt and Mary Leora Johnson Holt. She was predeceased by her sister, Judith Ann Holt Wilson of Cheyenne, WY. Mrs. Hurst was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served as Sunday School Treasurer and Volunteer Coordinator for many years, and was proud to be a member of the FaHoLo Sunday school class. A graduate of the University of Alabama, she was a former member of the Gay Gardeners Club and the Sumter Junior Welfare League. Anyone who knew her is aware that she was an avid German Shepherd lover and keen gardener. Shirley is survived by four sons, Stewart Hurst (Michelle) of Babson Park, FL, Keith Hurst and Kevin Hurst of Sumter and Todd Hurst (Corrie) of Greensboro, NC; four grandchildren, Charles Hurst (Alana) of Vero Beach, FL, Jacqueline Hurst Oliver (Jake) of Vero Beach, FL, and Miles and Nathaniel Hurst of Greensboro, NC; three great-grandsons, Hank Wesley Oliver, Ellis Wolf Oliver and Henley Michael Hurst of Vero Beach, FL, and a great-granddaughter, Kenna Ansley Hurst of Vero Beach, FL. Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Joseph James and Rev. Reginald Thackston officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday 5-7 at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. Burial will be private.
