Obituary of Theodore Allison Lide, Jr.

Theodore Alison Lide, Jr., 88, of Arbor Acres Retirement Community, Winston-Salem, entered into the immediate presence of his Lord on November 13, 2023. He was born March 2, 1935, in Reidsville, NC to the late Theodore Alison Lide, Sr. and Sarah Helen Jones Lide. Ted was lovingly raised by his aunt, Cecile “Sister”, and uncle, Judge Eugene, “Uncle Weetie” Purdy in Sumter, SC, and graduated from Sumter High School. He later graduated from Wofford College and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and Wofford Glee Club. Ted was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army having served three tours in Vietnam in the 1st Infantry Division “Big Red One”. Ted valued his service and attained the rank of Major. Ted raised his family in Barrington, Rhode Island where he was an active member at Riverside Covenant Church, serving as chairman. Mr. Lide was a faithful Christian, was a spiritual mentor to many and known for serving others. Ted was a franchisee for 50 years with Kentucky Fried Chicken, owning up to 6 restaurants at one time. Upon retirement, he moved to the Brick Landing Community in Ocean Isle Beach, NC. He wed Athalia Averitt and shared six years until her passing. Ted later married Sue Allred and spent nine wonderful years together. They enjoyed their time at the beach with many friends and were members of Camp United Methodist. They moved to Winston-Salem to be closer to family and rejoined Mizpah Moravian Church Ted was an avid golfer, loved animals, and as Red Sox fan, he enjoyed trips to Florida to watch spring training. He is survived by two daughters, Becky Lide Fowler of Johnston, RI, and Catherine Yamasaki (Curtis) of Long Beach, CA; grandchildren, David Yamasaki and Matthew Fowler (Pamela); half-brother, Al Womble; stepchildren; Natalie Smith, Leslie Yates (Kevin) and Julie Long (Chuck); six step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, Kylie, Noah and Ethan Fowler; and former spouse and mother to his children, Mary Jane Lide. In addition to his parents, aunt and uncle, Ted is preceded in death by his second wife, Athalia, and third wife, Sue Lide. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Arbor Acres and Trellis Supportive Care for the love and care given to Ted. A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 15 at Salem Funeral Home, 2951 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem, NC, 27106. A burial with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 16 at Sumter Cemetery, 700 W. Oakland Ave, Sumter, SC, 29151. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Arbor Acres Employee Emergency Assistance Fund or Trellis Supportive Care.
