At 10:45pm on Friday evening, June 21, 2024, Betty Stuart Scott, drew her last breath on this earth and entered eternal rest after a valiant ten-year battle with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease. She was born Elizabeth Stuart Haley on August 17, 1946, to Rosemary Hellman Haley and William Frederick Haley Sr., of Danville, VA who both predeceased her. She was a 1964 graduate of George Washington High School in Danville, VA. She furthered her education at Longwood College in Farmville, VA and graduated in 1968. It was here that she met the love of her life and married herself a Hampden-Sydney Gentleman on June 1, 1968. She and her husband, James M. Scott Jr. would put down roots in his home state of Wild, Wonderful, West Virginia. Betty Stuart would spend her life as an educator with 30 years of service in Prince Edward County, VA, and Boone and Fayette Counties in WV. She ran an award-winning culinary arts program in Fayette County. One of her proudest moments was when she was named the Pro-Start Teacher of the Year for the state of West Virginia. In 1986 she earned her master’s degree in communications from WVU. Upon her retirement in 2008, she and Jim moved to the Touchberry Family Farm in Pinewood, SC where she would spend her final years earning her doctorate in keeping Jim on the straight and narrow. Betty Stuart’s greatest accomplishments in life are the family she created. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 56 years James M. Scott Jr. of Pinewood, SC; her son James M. Scott, III of Beckley, WV; her son-in-law the Rev. John B. Snyder of Roanoke, VA; her granddaughter Haley C. Moore (Logan) of Chatham, VA; and her grandsons Bennett S. Snyder and James M. Snyder of Roanoke. Also left to cherish her memory is her large extended family: sisters, Judy Hooker and Terri Hall (Phil); brothers, Bill Haley (Carolyn), Philip Haley (Pat), Jeff Haley (Sarah), all of Danville, Joe Haley of Richmond, VA. Additionally, she is survived by sisters-in-law Lynda Munique of Princeton, WV and Ruthie Knabb (Johnny) of Madison, WV as well as all her cousins in South Carolina. Left to tell and hear tales about their aunt and great aunt are her many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Rosemary “Cori” Snyder of Gretna, VA, her eldest sister Amy Atkins, her nephew Lt. Col. William R. Watkins, III, and her brothers-in-law Dr. Tim Hooker and Butch Atkins. Special thanks to all who cared for Betty Stuart during her illness, especially Myra Artis, Gina Cuttina, and Tracy Stanley of Gentiva Hospice Care in Orangeburg, SC. We are also grateful to Sarah Louise Brookshire and Nicki Turner of Pinewood, SC for the wonderful care they provided. A memorial service is planned for her 78 th birthday on August 17, 2024, at 11:00 am at Woodlawn United Methodist Church in Roanoke, VA.
