Pamela Cox Davis, 78, wife of James “Jimmy” Knowlton Davis, Sr., died Thursday, December 5, 2024, at her home. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late George Edward Cox and Wilma Player Cox. Mrs. Davis graduated from Furman High School with leadership roles in student activities and student government, sports, academics, and awards. She then received a Bachelors degree from Winthrop College and began her teaching career in Sumter School District 17 in 1968, followed by Myrtle Beach schools then completing a fulfilling career at Wilson Hall School. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where she served as pre-school Sunday School teacher, Day Care Board of Directors and Summer Youth Missions Trip Counselor. Some of her favorite things in life were summer weekends at Santee with family, attending the children’s sports and school activities, cooking meals (especially three-finger biscuits) for the family, trying to Southernize a Yankee daughter-in-law and son-in-law and then doing whatever she could for her ten precious grandchildren. Surviving is her husband of Sumter; two sons, James Knowlton Davis, Jr. (Ashleigh) of Sumter and Owen Bass Davis (Valarie) of Santiago, Dominican Republic; a daughter, Portia Davis Hawley (Scott) of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Knowlton, Molly, William, Marion, Micah, Jesse and Abigail Davis and Luke, Jude and Ezra Hawley; two brothers, George Gary Cox (Virginia) and Edward Leroy Cox all of Sumter; and a sister, Patsy Dees of Sumter. She was preceded in death by a brother, H. Warren King; two sisters, Helen K. McLeod and Ann King Marsh. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service during visitation and reception at the Family Life Center of the church and other times at 60 Mere Court.
