For the Brown Family,
We are so sorrow for your loss but as I read from the obituary, Robert had a very full and eventful life and touched many people's lives. He surely will be missed but never forgotten. Stay strong and help each other through the days ahead.

Robert was my first cousin, mentor, and friend. We have been loyal friends since our earliest days as toddlers. I have a photo of us in 1944 sitting next to each other at a family gathering at 115 North Salem Avenue. For over seventy years we have loved each other as brothers not cousins. I always had the greatest respect and admiration for all that he accomplished in his life. We could be apart for years and upon meeting we would pick right up where we left off as if no time had passed.
My wife and I would visit Robert and Cathy at their lovely home, "Raven's Nest" where we always felt loved as only the closest friends and family can. Their home was filled with love for nature and we shared so many hours retelling family stories and laughing the hours away.
When my wife became ill over the last year, Robert would call on a regular basis to check on how she was doing. It is rare for a friendship to endure for over 70 years but ours did. We shared so many interests and we laughed together for most of those years. I could go on and on with stories about the good times we had together but will just say that I loved him like a brother and miss him terribly.

This is the remote island of Shemya in the Aleutians. It's two miles wide and four miles long. This was our home away from home while flying Rivet Ball (RC-135S, #59-1491) during the "Cold War" (1967-69).

My heart and prayers goes out to his friends and family in this time of sadness. He helped me tremendously in the making of my book on Potter's Raid last year. In fact I would dare say if it was not for him, the book might not have come out and certainly would not have been as good as it is. In addition I enjoyed passing on Sherlock Holmes related news to him as we both share a love of the great detective. (I can imagine him now quizzing Sir Arthur right now about things in the stories.)
The world has lost a great scholar and a good man and I have lost a friend.

"...rather rejoice that such men have lived." - General George Patton, Jr.
God bless and comfort you. Col. Robert Brown was such a brave and wise man, a wonderful teacher, a leader and an encouragement; I will miss his wit, his generosity, his calm and perspective, his knowledge and his dedication. I will not "miss" his good example, because I will keep his good example clearly in mind.
I remember the advice he gave Conrad on the way to The Citadel, the advice he gave me in the midst of turmoil, and his literature seminar and historical presentations - always truth delivered with precision and kindness.
I am certain that Heaven has a very good library and I hope to see him there.
