Obituary of Lloyd P. Bowman

Loyd Plato Bowman, 92, husband of Idona Huggins King Bowman, died Sunday, June 26, 2016 at Morningside of Sumter. Born January 13, 1924 in Plain Dealing, Louisiana, he was a son of the late Claude Eli Bowman and Ollie V. Isenhour Bowman. Mr. Bowman was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific with the Third Fleet as Navy Radioman. In 1948 he began his career with Federal Aviation Agency in air traffic control work. In 1951 he volunteered to go back to Pacific Area to work the Korean Airlift; first serving in Honolulu, then went to the Island of Guam as a Controller. In 1954 he transferred to Panama Canal Zone, serving there eleven years in Air Traffic work. In 1965 he returned to Hickory, NC working at Hickory Flight Service Station. He worked there until his retirement in 1985. Mr. Bowman was an active member of Westminster PCA Church; where Mr. Bowman served as Deacon and Elder and he was active in the Wycliffe Bible Translators as an Associate Member of the Sumter Chapter. He was currently a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church. Mr. Bowman was also active in the Christian Business Men’s Committee and a member of Hickory Lodge #343 of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. He was also active in Amateur Radio, his call was WB4BDH. Surviving is his wife of Sumter; two daughters, Carol Mahan of Charlotte, NC and Sharon Hubbard (Rich) of DE; two grandchildren, Rebecca Croissette (Jeff) of MD and Sara Walker (Elliott) of CA; four great-grandchildren, Molly, Liang, Luca, and Marlow. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie Rudisill Bowman; two sons, Stephen and Michael Bowman who were killed accidentally in a wreck on the Blue Ridge Parkway on December 27, 1983; four brothers, Ralph, Clifton, Atwell, and Glenn Bowman and two sisters, Marie Hollar and Ruby Lail. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Wednesday at Alice Drive Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Clay Smith and Rev. John C. Ropp, Jr. officiating. Burial will be at 3 PM Wednesday in the Catawba Memorial Park Cemetery in Hickory, NC. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1175 Cutleaf Dr. Memorials may be made to Alice Drive Baptist Church, 1305 Loring Mill Road, Sumter, SC 29150 or to Wycliffe Bible Translators, P.
